Stamping - Tips and Tricks
At a recent Tips & Tricks Class, one of my customers wanted some tips for stamping. Starting with some basic how to’s, and some other neat tricks. So that’s what we did!
I started with the basics; gently tap your stamp on your ink pad a number of times. Just gentle tapping, no squishing required! This works really well with our regular ink pads. If you are using our Stampin’ Spots from one of the kits, it is often easier to turn the stamp face up on the table, then tap, tap, tap, the ink spot onto the stamp. Then straight down on your cardstock applying firm pressure, but no rocking of the stamp required.
If you are using our red rubber stamps, this is all you need to do. If you are using our photopolymer stamps, adding some cushioning under your cardstock can help you get a sharper, full image. I use a half piece of our Stampin’ Pierce Mat (pg. 145) covered with paper for when my stamping goes over the edge of my cardstock.
After we played with that a bit, we moved on to stamping off. This is an easy technique that gives some fun shading to your stamping. You ink your stamp and stamp your image as usual, but then rather than inking it again, you stamp it a second or third time without reinking, giving a lighter shade of the same colour ink.
For these cards I used the Stamparatus. I stamped the first image full strength, them moved it up one hinge and stamped a second time. Up one more hinge and stamped a third time. It can be a good idea to ‘huff’ on your stamp for the second and third stamping to moisten the ink on the stamp a bit. The result is a run shading, gradual building to a big Happy Birthday.
We also did some stamping off to create some fern shadows for the background for this next card.
The main image on this card is from Free As A Bird, and coloured with Stampin’ Blends.
When you are stamping, give stamping off a try to see what fun shadows and shading you can create.
