My Struggle With 'White Space'

As with anything in life, every card maker faces challenges. One of my challenges is creating cards with lots of ‘white space’. An empty area on a card that allows us to fully embrace a portion of the card, then taking in the beauty of the whole, in an uncluttered view.
I decided to tackle this today, but wanted to ease into it a bit.

White Space isn’t always white, it is an open area, so I started with Basic Grey, but I used the 3D Textile Embossing Folder to add some texture to my open space. I used my Blending Brush to add some Basic Grey ink to the bottom portion to give my peony a shadow type of effect.
The peony is cut with the Peony Dies, from Pale Papaya cardstock, and I sponged the edges with Pale Papaya ink before I assembled the flower. The leaves are cut from Granny Apple Green. I added 3 Silver Metallic Peals near the top, but still left lots of open ‘white space’.
Overall I was happy with this card and felt ready for my next challenge!

I used the Prized Peony and Peony Dies for this card, but just stamped and die cut the flower and leaves, rather than building the full 3D peony flower. I used Grey Granite and Polished Pink this time. My Blending Brushes created the bottom shadow effect for my flower which is adhered with Dimensionals, and I add 3 Clear Rhinestones, this time near the bottom.
This card gave me more grief! I’m not loving all the open space, although there are parts of the card I do like.

I decided to give it another try, with a small modification.

This card has the same elements as the previous one, but I made my centre piece smaller, and added and extra layer of Polished Pink cardstock to frame my focal image. I am much happier with this card. There is still lots of white space, but some definition with the extra layer.

I will continue to work on this technique, and I know as with all things, the more you do, the easier it becomes.
Do you struggle with a certain type of card style or layout? Let me know in the comments and perhaps I can create a card for a future post to help inspire you.
I would love to hear from you!
